LTA Keys

EA6YG, SK

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of my friend and colleague Guillermo Mestre Janer, EA6YG.  Guillermo was the founder of LTA Keys, and he passed away on March 17th, 2008, after a long illness.  He was a good friend, and he will be missed.

As  of August 1, 2009, all of the remaining LTA keys have been sold.   Several of the LTA-made Morse Express Christmas Keys can be found at http://www.MorseX.com/xmas .

This page will remain in place as a historical reference and tribute to EA6YG.

Llaves Telegraphicas Artesanas

These are hand-crafted keys from LTA ("Telegraph Key Craftsmen") in the Balearic Islands of Spain. We believe these are very reasonable prices for keys that are individual works of art.

The keys are hand-assembled on Spanish Oak (LTA calls it "Noble Wood", or "abebay"), or machined brass bases. The straight key knobs are teak, and the fingerpieces for the paddles, bug and cootie key are olive wood. The mechanical parts are solid brass, highly polished and lacquered or gold (18K) plated.  Each key shows signs of individual craftsmanship and is unique.

Model ODT
Code Practice Oscillator Semi-Kit

LTA's "Oscilador de Tono" or code practice oscillator is a semi kit, with all the circuit board work done for you. All you have to do is connect the supplied speaker, and a telegraph key in the positive line of the 9V battery clip.   The ODT uses a quad gate oscillator with a slightly shaped tone for "smoother than square wave" sound.  Power consumption is minimal, and the 750Hz output pitch can be varied slightly by changing the supply voltage. Sounders & KOBs

21st Century KOB!

The KOB, or "key on board," is a standard piece of telegraph equipment going back to the very earliest days of the electric telegraph. in the mid 19th Century.   Tens of thousands of them were made through the middle of the 20th Century, but with the decline in the use of sounders they pretty much vanished.  With the introduction of LTA's new "Telegrapho,"  KOBs have been made in three centuries!  Originally designed as a training "station" for telegraphy, KOBs have been used as portable telegraph stations and training sets by tens of thousands of Morse operators.  They were adapted to use "buzzers" rather than sounders in the 1920's as radiotelegraphy became prevalent, and in that form are still available in the familiar "code practice set."  But this is the first KOB made with a sounder for probably 50 years or more.  And it includes the only commercial sounder made in the 21st Century.

Apart from being a striking conversation piece, the gold plated Telegrapho is a fully functional telegraph station suitable for training, demonstration setups, and display.  It has three terminals, two for a battery or other DC power source,  plus a line connection for use with another  "station."

The coil is 28 Ohms, for convenient operation with a 9 to 12V battery or power supply.  Click here for a scan of the instruction sheet, which is almost as entertaining as the device itself!

This is the closest thing we have to a time machine-- hook it up, close your eyes, and transport yourself back to 1870 with the rhythmical clicking of the classic telegraph....  see also the separate Sounder and Marconi Key below!

New!  21st Century Sounders!

Sounders are an "acquired taste" for modern hams, and a touch of nostalgia for older railroad telegraphers.  Note that this sounder has a resonance cavity in the base, and a 9V battery clip.  Just install a battery and connect your key across the outer two terminals.  The center terminal is a "loop" or "line" terminal for connecting a remote sounder in a full telegraph circuit.

BBMO BBMO "cootie key"
(gold plated, solid brass base)

Resembling a single lever paddle, the cootie key has identical contacts on both sides (two connections like a single straight key).  Characters are formed by starting on one side and then making the next dit or dah on the opposite side, cutting key movements in half.  Hams used to make their own with a hacksaw blade, and so cootie keys were seldom manufactured by commercial key makers.   The BBMO measures 10x5cm and weighs 601 g.

What Others are Saying...
My Cootie/Sideswiper [GMMO] arrived this morning just as promised, and I've been having a ball trying to get familiar with it. It's been 43 years since my old hacksaw-blade model, and it's a challenge. But then, that's what makes it fun. back. This LTA uses a center pivot whereas the old hacksaw type was pivoted on the far end, the near end being the contact area. I think I prefer the LTA system. And it certainly looks a ton better. The unit is gorgeous, very well made, and easy to adjust. The only  fault with it is the operator, but we're overcoming that. Thanks again ...  Charlie (W7BXH)

I bought the CRDO key and have had nothing but positive feedback from
everybody that I've shown it to...and I've proudly shown it to over 100
hams in our club here in the Portland, Oregon area.  I love it more each
day I use it and it's a real eye catcher, too!  Thanks again and I'll
recommend you highly to all of my friends!  73, Ed Corey K7OC
